The RIBA’s annual conference for practitioners working across practice sizes and sectors, the Smart Practice Conference aims to inspire and help members improve at the project and practice level. The 2021 Smart Practice Conference featured architects, engineers and clients at the forefront of sustainable design and construction. Speakers made the case for the uncompromising application of the principle ‘renew not demolish’; shared strategies and tools for achieving the 2030 Climate Challenge targets; showcased passive design strategies; debated how to design for change while minimising whole-life carbon; and explored Circular Economy principles. The second day put an emphasis on natural materials, featuring speakers who pioneered the contemporary application of traditional materials as well as current research and development in higher performing and hybrid materials. Speakers explained why any material use ought to be well considered and how to embed embodied carbon in the design process from the start; the benefits of sourcing and reusing reclaimed materials locally; debated which sustainability skills give architects a business edge.
