Layrr Materials Ferrium C64 is the solution for the "lightweighting" era. It is a high-strength, high-hardness steel designed specifically to replace standard gear steels. By offering a significantly higher surface hardness and core strength, it allows engineers to downsize gears and shafts without sacrificing load capacity. Material Behavior & Microstructure Ferrium C64 is a chemically designed material utilizing efficient nanoscale M2C carbide strengthening. Unlike traditional steels that rely on large carbides (which can act as stress risers), C64 relies on a fine dispersion of carbides within a martensitic matrix. This architecture delivers: Extreme Surface Hardness: Capable of achieving 62–64 HRC after carburizing, providing superior resistance to surface contact fatigue (pitting). High Tempering Temperature: It retains its properties up to ~482°C (900°F). This provides a massive safety margin for "oil-out" scenarios where gearboxes run dry and hot. Core Toughness: Maintains high fracture toughness in the core, preventing catastrophic tooth breakage under shock loads. Processing Advantage: The Layrr Standard Printing gears is one of the hardest challenges in additive manufacturing. The powder quality determines the fatigue life. Carburizing Efficiency: C64 is designed for Low-Pressure Vacuum Carburizing (LPC). Because the oxide layer is minimal and the chemistry is tuned for high hardenability, the heat treatment process is cleaner and more predictable than traditional gas carburizing. Dimensional Stability: The alloy exhibits very low distortion during the quench phase, critical for maintaining the complex tolerances of printed helical or herringbone gears.
