Saskia is an English artist, designer and educator trained at Glasgow School of Art. For over 30 years she has created colourful embroideries that express the imagined and the fanciful while being grounded and informed by her experiences, memories and observational drawings.Working by hand and with a domestic sewing machine as her drawing tools, she stitches freely onto textile grounds, building layers of fabric and thread into joyful, playful narratives. Birds are recurring characters in her work; the New Zealand Fantail a particular favourite, reflecting the global spread of family and all that connects her to the people and places she cherishes.Alongside her studio practice, Saskia has designed custom furniture, textiles and prototypes for individuals and industry, and has exhibited widely. In 2024 she was honoured to receive the Murray and Marvelle Koffler Founders Award at the Toronto Outdoor Art Fair.For the Selvedge Winter Fair, Saskia would present original embroidered artworks and ornament birds made in linen and silk, hand-embroidered pin cushions, hearts and birds made from repurposed wools, each piece carrying the warmth and quiet delight that defines her practice.Saskia lives and works in Toronto.
