This Iai practice sword is manufactured in Gifu Prefecture which has historically been known as the workplace of the Japanese swords. The blade is handmade with the traditional technique of sand casting. This is a replica sword. It is not real and cannot cut. Also, as it is made of alloy, it cannot be sharpened by yourself. Cautions for Use Material LimitationsThe blade material differs from real swords and cannot be sharpened. Regarding Sengo MuramasaThis sword was forged by Sengo Muramasa, one of the most famous swordsmiths from Ise (present-day Mie Prefecture). His name is widely known—even among those unfamiliar with Japanese swords—because of the legendary and ominous stories connected to Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first shogun of the Edo period (17th century). Muramasa’s blades are often called “Yōtō Muramasa” (“Cursed Muramasa” or “Spine-chilling Muramasa”). According to tradition, the grandfather, father, and son of Tokugawa Ieyasu all met their deaths by swords made by Muramasa, and Ieyasu himself was once wounded by one. For this reason, people believed that “Muramasa swords bring divine punishment upon the Tokugawa family.” Although Ieyasu was an extraordinarily capable general, his cunning and stern appearance earned him many enemies. For such people, Muramasa’s swords became a symbol of resistance against political authority. The hamon (temper line) on this blade resembles great ocean waves, producing a strikingly beautiful effect when it catches the light. This sword should be used not only for Iai practice but also for decoration in your living.[NOTE] This is a modern replica created by a contemporary sword manufacturer, inspired by the legendary sword of Tokugawa Ieyasu. It is not the original historical blade.
