Honey moisture content and wine Brix are both critical quality checkpoints — and both require refractometry. The VEE GEE Scientific MDX-Series Digital Honey and Wine Refractometers bring digital accuracy and ATC temperature compensation to these applications, replacing the eyepiece-based analog instruments that require calibration skill and consistent ambient light. Place a drop on the well, press READ, and the LCD displays your result in seconds with all 4 measurement scales shown simultaneously. IP65/67 rated for use in production environments, kitchens, and field harvesting settings. The Continuous Loop Average function is particularly valuable for viscous honey samples where optical wetting of the prism surface may vary — the averaging function smooths individual droplet variation into a stable reported value. Includes hard shell case, disposable pipette, and battery. Features and Benefits Application-Specific Scales: MDX-301 honey scales: Brix, Moisture Content, Water Activity (Aw), and Baumé. MDX-401 wine scales: Brix, Potential Alcohol (%), Refractive Index, and Sugar (g/L). ATC for Production Consistency: Temperature-compensated readings eliminate the variation introduced by measuring honey at different process temperatures or wine samples directly from fermentation vessels. IP65/67 Rated: Suitable for beekeeping field use, winery production floors, and food processing environments where moisture and particulate exposure are routine. Continuous Loop Average: Especially valuable for viscous honey — averages multiple readings from a single sample load to smooth variation from uneven prism coverage. Large LCD with Simultaneous Data: Selected scale and sample temperature display together — no secondary temperature measurement required for documentation. Full Kit Included: Hard shell protective case, pipette, battery, and manual — immediately deployable after initial distilled water calibration. Honey below 17.1% moisture is generally considered stable. The MDX-301 displays this directly without manual conversion from Brix, saving a calculation step in production. What is Potential Alcohol on the MDX-401 Wine scale? The Potential Alcohol (%) scale converts Brix to estimated alcohol by volume (ABV) using the standard formula assuming complete sugar fermentation. It provides a pre-fermentation harvest estimate of expected wine alcohol — a planning tool for winemakers, not a post-fermentation ABV measurement. Can MDX-301 be used for non-honey applications?Yes — MDX-301 measures Brix 0–90% on its Brix scale, making it usable for general sugar measurement. However, the Moisture Content, Baumé, and Aw scales are calibrated for honey specifically and will not give meaningful results for other products. Quality Assurance VEE GEE Scientific MDX-Series refractometers are manufactured to IP65/67 standards with factory-calibrated prism assemblies. Each unit undergoes ATC performance verification and LCD display testing prior to shipment. The hard shell carrying case provides drop protection for field deployment. VEE GEE backs the MDX series with a 1-year warranty.
