Galectin-14 (Gal-14) is a member of the galectin family and one of the prototype galectins. It contains a carbohydrate recognition domain (CRD) responsible for binding β-galactosides, and exists as a biologically active homodimer. Similar to galectin-13, which is expressed in the placenta and involved in T-cell apoptosis, immune regulation, and immune tolerance, galectin-14 plays a crucial role in fetal development. It enhances trophoblast cell migration and invasion by promoting the expression of MMP-9 and N-cadherin via the Akt pathway. Additionally, galectin-14 stimulates unprimed T cells to produce IL-8, a process associated with angiogenesis at the maternal-fetal interface.
